Recently, when I was coaching a #salesleader, we discussed how a strength can become a weakness. She was talking about a representative who was very reluctant to adopt a new product and pushed back on any change. I asked her what other virtues the representative showed. The answer was persistence that sometimes bordered on stubbornness. This representative was very dedicated and would stick to the plan until completed.
That was an “aha” moment when we both realized that the same powerful persistence could become a reluctance for change. As we explored it, we realized that we sometimes can “overdo our strengths”. A sales leader who is gifted in operation but whose relentless focus on results leads to micromanagement. Or a sales leader who is too supportive, risks enabling a #salesculture of underperformance.
So, next time you look at your strengths, please also check if you overdo them. This will elevate your self-awareness.
